“Sometimes I hate what I paint and end up trying to wash the dye out. This is what happened to the background in this piece, which is why it looks a little faded compared to the whale sharks. I then worked on the individual whale sharks adding darker lines and layers of dye before adding the silvery details over their bodies.
I love this painting now and the sparkle on the sharks, it reminds me of the awe I felt while swimming with them a few years ago.”
